Life without Internet

For most people between the ages of around 12 to 30, the internet has become the doorway to abundant information, a source of constant company, a necessity and a boredom- buster. We can navigate our business endeavors, find a new flame or communicate with relatives over the other side of the world for free.

Internet invades our living rooms, bedrooms, workplaces, cell phones, and hiptops & sidekicks. It has become so easily accessible and beneficial for everyone, but what would happen if all internet connections were cut and we were left with only our regular telephones and more basic forms of communication and recreation?

I believe at first its absence would create havoc; No eBay, no e-mail, no online chats or web cams, no researching from the comfort of home or searching for countless jobs on the plethora of employment sites. In time we would slowly adjust to not having everything at our fingertips; just like how we adjusted to having something so powerful and convenient to shop, talk, work, research and play from. I think the world would become more personalised again, which seems to me a positive event; hand writing letters would make a comeback, calling a friend for a chat would replace tapping away on a keyboard and communication with people you would usually just email would become more functional; taking in account that body language and tone makes up around 80% percent of what you convey to the listener. Students would take trips to the library and note-take for assignments and essays as opposed to “copy and pasting” an assignment – and instead of checking the daily headlines on ninemsn we would be forced to pick up the newspaper and have a leisurely read.

Internet is certainly not a bad asset, but it has contributed to making the world impersonal and lets us take shortcuts in everything we do. Life without internet for some would be hard to fathom, and at the rate it is developing, changing and improving it is hard to imagine it would ever regress or leave us which even i am thankful for.
